Motorola Announces U.S. Xoom Successors "Droid Xyboard" Tablets

Motorola has introduced its two latest successors to the Xoom, but they're not called "Xoom 2" like the UK/Ireland versions; they're the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and Droid Xyboard 10.1

After releasing the Xoom 2 in the United Kingdom and Ireland last month, Motorola has finally announced two new follow-ups to the original Xoom tablet: the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and Droid Xyboard 10.1.

Motorola launched its Android-powered Xoom tablet in February 2011. Last month, it released the
10.1-inch Xoom 2 and the 8.2-inch Xoom 2 Media Edition in the United Kingdom and Ireland only. Many wondered when the U.S. would receive a Xoom 2 or its equivalent, and it looks as though that time is coming soon.

Motorola has introduced its two latest successors to the Xoom, but they're not called "Xoom 2" like the UK/Ireland versions; they're the Droid Xyboard 8.2 and Droid Xyboard 10.1.

Why the name change? According to PCWorld, Motorola changed it up for two reasons: To
break ties with the original Xoom in an effort to start fresh, and to please Verizon, which prefers that "Droid" be part of the title so that it is associated with the successful Droid smartphones the carrier offers.

The Droid Xyboard 8.2 and 10.1 both feature dual-core 1.2 GHz processors, 1 GB of RAM, and LTE 4G capabilities. The Droid Xyboard 8.2 has an 8.2-inch display while the Droid Xyboard 10.1 has a 10.1-inch display, and both have the Android 3.2 operating system, although they will be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in 2012. Both tablets will also feature preloaded business apps such as Citrix GoToMeeting and Quickoffice HD.

The Droid Xyboard 8.2 will have 16 GB and 32 GB versions for $430 and $530 respectively with a new two-year LTE contract. The Droid Xyboard 10.1 will have 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB versions for $530, $630, and $730 respectively with a new two-year LTE contract.

Both tablets are set to launch this month, and there it is currently unclear if there will be a Wi-Fi version of the tablets.
